Car Finance with a Default and bad credit

I had a default with my bank 3 years ago which is now satisfied, but since then I haven’t been able to get credit from anywhere even though I repay my bills on time every month. Any suggestions?

Lindsey

Answer

Hi Lindsey, thank you for your question. If you are now keeping up with your payments we should be able to get you accepted for car finance even though you have a past default. We do have a few lenders on our panel that help people with past credit issues anyway.

We obviously know each different car credit provider's criteria and so we'll be able to match up your credit profile with the right lender. As long as you have a UK licence and can prove your income (3 months payslips or bank stats) i'm confident we can get you approved.

Once accepted we provide you with a no obligation quote and you can buy a car from any dealer in the UK. Please make an application when you're ready. Kind Regards, Rachel

Hi, I have defaulted on several credit cards in the past and I have been paying for 3 years on a debt management plan to repay my debts. Therefore my credit history is poor, my debts are £105k , however my wife was only involved with the default with our joint bank account so no credit cards linked. We earn £3500 per month take home pay, own a house and have never not paid our bills or missed mortgage payments. Could we apply for a joint loan for a car, in the region of 6k? I also have a BMW 330d to trade in worth about £3k. Please help!

Answer

Hi Daren, sorry for the late reply. From what you've said it may be best for your wife to apply in her name only. Does she work and can she prove her income with payslips? If so, the £6,000 shouldn't be a problem if we can get your wife approved and we can take your BMW part exchange in swap too. Regards, Rachel

Hi, I had a couple of defaults on my credit file that stopped me from getting credit. There are meant to be gone by the end of this month after pending for about 6 years. Would i manage to get a car on finance with you?

Answer

Hi Mike, if the defaults are from over 5 years ago then i'm confident that we'll be able to get you approved as long as your current credit profile is up to date. Is this the case? Do you have a deposit, are you on the electoral roll and can you prove your income? If so, we should be able to help. Regards, Rachel

Hi Rachel. I have a full time permanent well paid job however, a previous account defaulted which is now paid for in full. However since the correction I haven't applied for any credit. I am looking to by a new car. Although I am also wondering what the catch is as this seems too good to be true. And what is the selection of cars like? Thanks

Answer

Hi Sam, we have over 300 cars to choose from and all makes and models and price ranges are catered for. Even if we don't have anything in stock for you we can source a vehicle quickly from our trade suppliers. There's no catch - we simply supply the car and the finance and we can even take your part exchange, if you have one, as full deposit. Regards, Rachel

Hi, I have a bad credit history with defaults that aren't yet satisfied. I have just a few months on a loan from my bank to pay off that I have not defaulted on and a store card that I have kept up to date for about 18 months. What are the chances of a car loan? My current car is falling apart and I feel i am throwing money away by repairing it. I need my car for work.

Answer

Hi Nicola, from what you have said it looks like you have some bad credit and some good credit which is better than just bad. What i'd like to know is how much your default is for. If it's over £5000 we may struggle to get you approved but if it's under £5000 we may just be able to help. If approved we can also take your part ex off you and get you into a newer car in no time. Please apply and we'll try our best to get you accepted.

I have defaulted on a payment of £281 which i paid off in full but, i have a poor credit history because of this. I am 21 years old and am in full time employment in a good paid job yet i am unsure if i can get car finance. It will be for my first car and i was looking to put a deposit down of about £2000 on a car that is no bigger than a 1.4. I can afford a reasonably high monthly payments of up to £450 pcm and the length of the contract doesn't bother me. I was wondering if you could offer any advice on if i will be able to get a finance agreement?

Answer

Hi James, there's every chance of being approved as you're employed and have a decent size deposit - i also assume you have a valid full UK drivers licence. You have a good budget too so the only thing we need to do now is get you approved and as the default amount is relatively small we should be able to help you hopefully. Are you on the electoral roll at your current address? Rachel

Yes, I am on the electoral role however, I haven't been on it for long. My main concern is the credit check, I am able to show reciepts of all the rent I have payed on my flat on time and all my other bills but I was stupid when I was younger and went into my overdraft a lot missed payments for things, whereas now I only have a phone bill as I have paid everything off but it was only recently that I paid them off, do you think I should wait for my credit to improve before I apply maybe in a couple of months time?

Answer

Hi James, it won't make a massive difference to be honest. If you need a car please apply now. Have a good weekend.

Can you finance someone with a deafault? I found out that I have one last week when a car garage refused me finance. I am disputing the default and my credit score is 764.

Answer

Hi Kris, thank you for your question and the answer is Yes, we can finance people who have defaults. Your credit score seems reasonable so i'm more than confident that we can secure you finance. How much do you require and do you have a deposit or cash deposit? Lastly, are you on the electoral roll? Regards, Rachel

Hi, my 'W' reg Vauxhall Tigra is costing me more and more to get it through an MOT; I really need a another car as I need it for work however, I have a disputed default with a fashion catalogue which has not yet been sorted and I have a couple of credit cards. One with a £1k limit on which i have now increased my minimum payments to higher monthly amount and the other one i'm just paying the minimum payment. The good news is that my bank loan will end after 2 more payments and I will be £174 better of each month, which I was thinking would purchase me a decent car. I also have an approx £500 deposit saved that I could use as a. Can you help?

Answer

Hi Sharon, as in Kris' circumstances above we'll be able to secure you finance as i'd imagine your default is only for a small amount with it being from a catalogue company. We can also take your Tigra as part exchange and the fact you have a £500 deposit is also great news. You seem like you have quite a bit of active credit which is great as it allows lenders to look at your payment history. Please apply and we'll get you matched with a lender that best suits your circumstances. Regards, Rachel :-)

Hi, I have a couple of defaults on my credit score and I am going through a debt management plan for debts that I picked up a few years ago. However I am now earning good money and I'm making regular payments to this and have never missed a payment for anything else, rent bills etc. I would be looking to borrow £3000 to go towards a new family car as we have a new baby coming so need something bigger. As i have defaults on my account, will this prevent me from taking out a loan with you? Many thanks, Darren

Answer

Hi Darren, we do have lenders who take people on who are in debt management plans and have defaults on their records so please apply and we'll try our best to get you approved. Obviously i can't guarantee anything until we've seen your profile as some people are a lot worse than others. Would you have a deposit at all as that would help your cause? Kind Regards, Rachel

Hi Rachel, I have a poor credit history which is slowy getting better. It's currently at 350 on Equifax. I have 1 default for £690 on an overdraft however, this account is now settled. I do also have a couple of late payments here and there. But for well over the last 12 months I haven't missed any payments and all my accounts that are active are up to date. I do have 2 credit cards with a combined total of just over £1k however I am making more than my minimum payments in order to close them. I am in full time employment as well. I have seen a car on fords of winsford for £3,999.00 and I am working up to getting a deposit of £600-800 depending on bills and living expenses obviously. Would I be able to get finance?

Answer

Hi Jess, from what you have told me i'm confident that we could get you approved with no issues. Obviously you're not going to get high street rates but you should expect between 12% and 16%. The great news is that you've had a clean bill of health for the last 12 months, you have a deposit and you're in full time employment. Please apply when you're ready. Kind Regards, Rachel

Answer

Hi Colin, as long as the defaults were under £5000 individually (and they're not related to past car finance) then we should be able to get you approved as long as you are employed and are on the electoral roll. Is this the case? Lastly do you have any form of deposit? Regards, Rachel

Hi Rachel, yes i have a deposit of £1000. Will it be enough? My default amounts were just over £400 each. Yes i have a full time job and i'm on the electoral roll. I was going to get a loan for £10000 i suppose this will be out of my reach will it?

Answer

Hi Colin, thanks for the response. Great news on the deposit, job & electoral roll status. If you need £10,000 and we get you approved we'll potentially need another £750 to £1000 from you. Is this possible? Rachel

Hello Rachel, I'm afraid that's all the deposit i have. I wish i had more and i think you have told me what i already know in that i'm never going to get the car i want. I'm trying to get my credit history back again but i think lenders don't help in helping people like me. I'm really trying to turn my life around again and people don't understand that.

Answer

Hi Colin, we can help you and i'm confident we can get you approved for say £7000 but not the £10,000 that you need as you only have a £1000 deposit. Lenders aren't going to start giving people £10,000 straight of the bat when you have a poor credit history. However, we can help you if you require car finance. Rachel

Hi there, I have a default on my credit file from back in 2007 for £86.00 which I settled in April 2008 as I was out the country between this time. It is currently with the Ombusman to review as I had originally called up to pay and the company took all my details for payment. I have no other defaults or late payments but my credit score due to the default is 355. What kind of rates would I get if you could provide finance? Thanks.

Answer

Hi Alexis, as the default was only for a small amount and as it was over 5 years ago now i'm confident we could get you approved. As your score is quite low the rate i'd expect you to pay would be between 12% and 16%. Are you on the electoral roll, are you employed and do you have a deposit? Rachel

Hi, I'm in need of a new car ASAP. I've got a default on my credit file from like 3 years ago for £900 which was a £400 overdraft plus charges. I am currently in part time work but receive top ups from tax credits so earn about £1000 a month plus my partner earns £1300 a month before tax! Would I be able to get a decent new car? Help! Thanks

Answer

Hi Ashley, i'd advise making a joint application with your partner and then we should be able to sort something out for you. The default isn't for a huge amount so i'm confident we can do something as long as you're on the electoral roll. When you have made an application please come back to me with your reference number so that i can process your application. Rachel :-)

My partner in 2008 got a Credit default on his account. Will this affect his chances of buying a car? He has put a note on the credit report. Will this help?

Answer

Hi Annabel, the note will certainly help as it will inform lenders of how the problem occurred and what's happened since then. The one default shouldn't harm his chances of being approved now as it was 4 years ago. It may effect the rate of finance he gets offered but we should be able to get him approved with one of our lenders. Has his credit been clean since the default? Does he have a deposit and is he on the electoral roll at his current address? Kind Regards, Rachel

Hi, I hope you can help me please. My partner has a poor credit rating with two default accounts from a credit card and a student overdraft. He is now working full time and is paying a bit of each month so his credit rating has improved from very poor to poor. Now he is in desperate need of a car an we do not have the money for this so car finance is the only option. He lives at his parents address and unfortunately I am a student with no income but a fair credit history. Is there any chance of him getting finance at all? We do have the option of his dad being a guarantor who has good credit rating. Thanks Michelle

Answer

Hi Michelle, we do specialise in helping people who have bad credit and have had defaults in the past etc so please tell your partner to apply on our website and if his Dad could go guarantor that would strengthen his chances :-)

Hi Rachel. I currently have a credit score of 589; that admittedly needs some working on. There is a default on my report at the moment that has another 3 years to run. I'm looking for a loan of around 5-7 thousand. Would you deem this possible? If so what would the APR be? Many thanks.

Answer

Hi Sam, we do help people with defaults on their file so the £5000 - £7000 that you need should be achievable. Are you employed, on the electoral roll and do you have a deposit of any kind? The APR you would expect if approved would vary between 12% and 18% depending upon where you get accepted. Regards, Rachel

Hi Rachel. Yes I am currently employed and on Ghent electoral roll; in regards to the deposit, what sort of number would we be looking at that would make things easier? I also have a car that I could part exchange with a value of between 600 and 700 pounds. Many thanks.

Answer

Hi Sam, that's great news. You could use your part exchange as full deposit so you would only perhaps need £100 cash to cover car tax etc. Please apply when you get chance, it only takes 2-3 minutes. Kind Regards, Rachel

I have a bad credit rating due to losing a business and wife leaving me. I have tried to get car finance and was offered a loan - this was in January 2012. The only problem i seem to have now is i forgot who they are now that i'm ready to buy a car. I'm in full time employment can you help? By the way someone did try to offer me a loan at 49% interest. I wasn't born yesterday.

Answer

Hi Peter, we'll be able to get you approved for finance but as you have a bad credit rating you will be paying more than the high street rates. It'll be a minimum of 25% if i'm being honest. Better than 49% but obviously higher than the banks for example. I'm sure you'll be aware of this though. Please apply and let me know your reference number. Have a good weekend - Rachel

hi Rachel you said you can use your old car as the deposit as my mot has just run out i was wondering if it would still be possible to use the car as deposit

Hi James, yes it is possible to use your car as a part exchange however without a valid MOT it will reduce the amount a dealer will give you in return. So it may be worth getting it done :) Rachel

I am looking to get finance as my car is getting a little worse for wear but i have a low credit rating. However I have contract phones and other things on my credit file that get paid on time every month but i have one as a default which i fell behind with couple of years ago. I am making payments every month to it but i still shows in default even though im paying it will i be able to get finance?

Answer

Hi Michelle, Thanks for your post. The most important thing is that you are trying to improve your credit profile through keeping up with your payments on any active accounts. You are correct in saying that your default will still be showing on your credit profile. However lenders will be able to see that this is reducing which will help. We do deal with many lenders that will consider people with defaults so I am confident that we can help! Thanks, Rachel

Hi there, Me and my partner are wanting to get a new car my credit score is 745 I also have a default which ends this year which I was unaware of until I did my experian check! My partners score is 758. I wanted to get the finance on my own however if a joint application improves our chance of better finance thats is what we will go for. We have a deposit of £1,500 -£2,000. How much do u think we could get? Many thanks

Answer

Hi Becky, thanks for your question. Your credit score is relatively good in light of your default. On that basis I am confident that we will be able to help. It is always beneficial to put a joint application through so our underwriters can assess what the best option for you would be and if necessary remove one applicant in order to gain the best acceptance. With regards to the amount I would be looking to put you with one of our sub-prime lenders who will lend up to £25k. However you would require a deposit. I hope I have answered your question. Answer

Hi Ben, luckily there are lenders that we deal with who will finance customers with previous defaults. However you are more likely to gain an acceptance if you are trying to reduce these defaults as this shows the lenders your intent to improve your profile. The deposit required largely depends on how well the car is priced. You would need to make an application in order for us to state what/if you would need a deposit. Thanks, Rachel

Hi, i have a very poor credit score of 292 due to having 6 defaults on my report and 1 ccj all which were included in my bankruptcy in 2011. I'm now discharged from my bankruptcy for over a year and earning £1100 after tax and have a small balance credit card and catalogue that im using to build my credit back up - i'm up to date with these always. I'm also on the electoral register for my existing address and hold a full drivers licence. Is it possible to get finance for a car?

Answer

Hi Adele, thank you for your question. If i'm honest it'll be tough to get you approved for car finance as you were only discharged within the last 12 months or so and 6 defaults seems pretty severe. You now tick the boxes in terms of building your credit score back up and being on the electoral register so we can certainly give it a shot but i can't promise anything. Have you applied anywhere else yet? Rachel

Yes, i'm waiting on a reply from Arnold Clark. I applied with confidence as my credit report was 809 as i thought i had built it up as my report started off at 600 odd and out of the blue over night it plummeted to 282 the day after i made my application as none of my defaults showing. All off them are from 2008 i was young and reckless i now know how important my credit report is and trying to improve this.

Answer

Hi Adele, the reason your credit score may have plummeted is down to the number of searches made against your name from lots of different finance companies when you submitted your application to Arnold Clark. Could you find out which finance companies they submitted you too - i may then be able to tell you whether we'd have a chance or not of helping. Have a good day. Rachel

Hi, I currently have car finance through Santander which is due to end in six months after four years of payments. I have never missed a payment during this period and I am now seeking a newer vehicle.

I want to spend about £15k on a new car but with defaults on my credit report from 4 years ago. I would like to know if you think I may have a chance of obtaining credit from the same lender? Thanks, Wayne

Hi Wayne, thank you for your question.

In all honesty i don't think Santander will offer you a new finance agreement if you have visible defaults on your credit profile. You can certainly try though.

If you get refused i am confident we can help though as you have a clean HP agreement and haven't had any credit issues recently. Once approved with us we provide a no obligation quote and you can choose a car from any dealer. Please make an application when you're ready. Kind Regards, Rachel

Hello my credit history is very bad currently at 415. This is due to payments being missed in the past.

However, I have had a secure job for the past 8 months which pays a reasonable monthly wage. I am also trying to get on the voting register too as I am not currently on there.

Would I still be able to get a car on HP as I desperately need a car for work?

Answer

Hi Ahmed, thank you for your question.

As you have a job paying a decent salary we could potentially get you accepted for car finance. We do have lenders that help people with bad credit get car finance but we can't guarantee an approval until we've seen your credit profile.

Please make an application and once approved we provide a no obligation quote and you can buy a car from any dealer in the UK. Kind Regards, Rachel
