Young car loans customers 'should think small'

19 February 2009

People taking out Car Loans after passing their driving test have been urged to think small.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), new motorists cannot necessarily cope with more powerful vehicles.

It suggested drivers opt for something with a small engine while they are still getting used to being on the road unaccompanied.

The organisation claimed people are less likely to be involved in accidents in diminutive models.

Peter Staddon, Biba's head of technical services, said: "If you have a smaller car it could help to build up your no claims bonus and that is something we try and encourage young drivers to do."

He added newly-qualified motorists should not worry about being unable to afford insurance, as the industry was constantly coming up with innovative ways to ensure cover is available to everyone.

Meanwhile, a recent study from the Institute of Advanced Motorists discovered young male drivers living in towns and cities are most likely to get behind the wheel uninsured.
