Do I have to have a drivers licence to get car finance?

Can I get car credit if I have no drivers licence? The car is for my family and i'm thinking of letting my husband drive as he has a licence.

Hi Natasha, if the vehicle was specifically for yourself then yes you would need a driving licence. However, as this is a family car you'd be best to let your husband apply for the finance as he's the one with the driving licence. You could also make a joint application for car credit which would potentially strengthen the application anyway. I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Edwin

Im wondering about the same thing really. My credit is appaling, but my mothers is not too bad. She doesn't have a license though so is it feasible for her to apply for credit for me to have the car or for her to be the main applicant and myself a joint.

Hi Dan, your mother could act as a guarantor so get her permission first and then make a joint application for car finance on our website. It doesn't matter if your mum hasn't got a licence of the car is for you. If she did have a licence however, we could put the finance in your mum's name a get a better rate but that ouldn't help build back up your credit profile (and she doesn't have a licence so we'll hold that thought). Kind Regards, Edwin

Hi, I was thinking the same kind of thing too, My girlfriend can't get finance because she doesn't work so I wanted to get the car on finance for her but I do not have a licence would I still be able to get it ?

Hi Bob, do you have a provisional licence at all? If so we could get you approved at one lender we have on our panel. Does your girlfriend have good credit? If so, there may be a way round this. If she has bad credit then we have no chance of getting her approved for finance in her name if she doesn't work as she'd have to prove her income. Does your girlfriend have another family member at all that can help? Kind Regards, Edwin

Hi Jenny, if we were to do the finance in your husbands name then he would need a driving licence. The only way to get the issue resolved is for you both to complete a joint application for car finance. Does your husband have an income or are you both out of work? Kind Regards, Edwin

Hi Robert, you would need a driving licence to get car finance. The only way around it would be to get a personal loan from your bank. How are you going to drive a car/van if you have no licence though? Edwin

i have an appalling credit history but my daughter who is full time employed with a credit rating over 806 but has a provisional licence aged 18 can she get a car for me?

Hi Asaf, we could get your daughter approved but as she only has a provisional licence she'd only get approved at our one and only sub-prime lender who helps people with provisional licences. My advice would be for you to apply yourself and see if we could get you accepted at a mid-teir finance company or wait until your daughter has a full UK licence and then we'll be able to offer better rates. Thanks, Edwin

My Mum is disabled and we both thought that she was on the higher rate of mobility. We have recently discovered though that she is not on the higher rate as first believed. DLA now say is not entitled to the higher rate because she is over 65 even though her mobility decreased well before them. Because of this my mum said she would buy a car on finance so I can drive it for her which would help immensly however today the car dealer phoned to say that we cant get the car because my mother doesnt have a driving licence.

Hi Katie, it may be worth applying in your name and your mum's to get approved for car finance as your mum has no licence. Have you got a clean credit record? Kind Regards, Edwin

Hi there, I got approved for finance on a £17000 car however, I only hold a provisional licence. My husband has a licence but has a trust deed so would not get accepted for finance. Is there any way i can add him to the application even though he has bad credit as I'm already accepted?

Hi, my husband has currently got car finance and we have a year left to pay on current car but we are desperate for new car and to get out of this horrible finance agreement! He had his licence revoked and is currently on a provisional and I am the main driver but I have a full driving license. However, i'm only in part time work and get paid by cheque so it's very hard to prove my income. Can you help?

Hi there, I have virtually no credit rating but my partners is good. I have a licence and he doesn't. I am employed full time as a civil servant, can prove income etc, he doesn't work and is on incapacity benefit. Is there any way around applying for finance as we badly need a new family car? Thanks in advance.

I am due to take my test in the next couple of days and really want a car but have no deposit. Plus i would want the car ASAP - is this possible?! I have a credit card and a contract phone and all payments are always made on time. I probably only want to pay about £180 to £200 a month!

Hi Ann, sincere apologies for the delayed response. I'd advise you to get a personal loan as we won't be able to help you if you don't have a driving licence. Also if we could get your husband approved we couldn't get him anywhere near the £17,000 amount and the interest rate will be a great deal higher than what you have currently been offered. Kind Regards, Edwin

Hi Glen, again apologies for the delayed response. Does your wife have good credit? If so, we'll be able to get her car finance even though she is a part time student as she won't have to prove her income. As you don't have a licence unfortunately we won't be able to help you. Kind Regards, Edwin

Hi Casey, how is your credit history? If it's good then we don't need to worry about proving your income as the lender you get approved with won't ask for it. How much are you looking to borrow? We do have one lender where we could potentially get your husband approved with a provisional licence but the interest rates are quite high with that particular lender. Lastly, have you ever missed any payments on your current car finance agreement and are you on the electoral roll? If we get you approved we'd be able to take your current vehicle in part exchange and settle the existing finance. Actually - what is your car worth and how much do you have left to pay on the agreement? Kind Regard, Edwin

Hi Susan, do you have any credit at all? A contract mobile phone perhaps or any credit / store cards? As you husband doesn't have a licence we won't be able to get him passed for car finance with our lending panel. However, he could act as a joint hirer on the application to back you up. If this isn't possible we can still hopefully get you approved as you have a job and can prove your income. I look forward to receiving your application. Regards, Edwin

Hi Kate, we'd be able to get you a better rate of finance once you have passed your driving test as we only have one lender that approves individuals with provisional licences. As you seem to have a good credit score it'd be silly to limit you to the one lender. Please apply once you've passed your test and we'll have you in a new car in no time at all and to fit your budget. Kind Regards, Edwin

Hi, me and my wife are trying to get finance for a car. I am employed but have no license. However, she doesn't work but does have a license. Can I finance and get a car for her?

Posted by Wayne on 18/05/2012 @ 04:01

Hi Wayne, as you have no licence your wife would have to apply for finance herself. You could potentially act as a guarantor however, if your wife has a good credit history this won't be required. If your wife does have good credit we'll be able to get her finance without her having to prove any income. Is this the case? Regards, Edwin
