What makes the best used sports cars?

Sports cars are all about fun. They’re most people’s dream car for a reason; the best sports cars offer unrivalled driving experiences, looks that are guaranteed to turn heads, and eye-watering speed. You don’t buy a sports car because you’re looking for a practical vehicle to get from A to B, you buy it because you love the way it feels to drive.

If you’re looking to buy a used sports car, you should look out for all these things and more: how do you feel when you get in the driving seat? Is it responsive and agile? Will it bring you joy every time you look out at your driveway? Answer no to any of these questions and you might want to think twice before taking the plunge and making a purchase.

Buying a used sports car

Buying a used sports car is a great way to make your dream car a reality. Not only will you be more likely to find a model at a reasonable price, but it could also help you save money for the higher insurance and running costs that often come with a prestige vehicle.

Don’t feel pressured to rush into a purchase. Take your time and assess all the options available before choosing to move forward. Like any used car, the best used sports cars have low mileage, a full-service history, and a limited number of previous owners. Make sure you also carry out thorough checks of the interior and exterior: look out for any scratches and scrapes, torn upholstery, or signs of past repairs.

Test drives are important. Keep in mind that tyres, brakes, and clutches can all be worn out faster in sports car than they would be in a standard vehicle so pay special attention to these parts during the drive. Check all the electronics such as the windscreen wipers, air conditioning, heating, and lights, and choose a route that takes in a variety of different road types and surfaces.

8 of the best used sports cars

Porsche Cayman

The sound of a sports car is unlike any other vehicle. If you’re looking for a model that really growls, then you won’t be disappointed by the distinctive engine rumble of the Porsche Cayman. Featuring six cylinders, the Cayman’s engine packs a punch and provides drivers with a thrilling driving experience, backed up with Porsche’s high-quality engineering. Its power is balanced by responsive handling and excellent cornering that combines lightness and agility. The Cayman’s steering is confident, and its brakes are reassuringly solid too. The exterior is sporty yet elegant and inside, you and a passenger can sit comfortably. You’ll have a generous 422 litres of boot space to play with in total and Satnav is fitted as standard so there’s no need to worry about getting lost on your next adventure.

Audi TT

The Audi TT is consistently one of the most popular used sports cars on the market thanks to its combination of performance and practicality. It offers all the exhilaration you’d expect from a premium vehicle but it’s still usable for everyday driving; it’s a car that can reach serious speeds on the motorway but also help to make stop/start traffic more bearable on your daily commute. The car’s build feels solid and complements its sharp exterior design and carefully sculpted cabin. There are a range of engine types available, and you’ll benefit from a decent boot considering the compact size of the car (maximise space by folding down the back seats in the four-seat coupe model). With its eye-catching looks, powerful engine, and high-quality interior, it’s easy to see why the TT is one of Audi’s best-selling cars.

BMW Z4

If you’re looking for a used sports car that exudes style, the BMW Z4 is one of the best-looking models available. Its striking, modern exterior is enhanced by an elegant roof and signature kidney grille with mesh design, which combine to create a grown-up take on the classic sports car. That doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to drive; power comes from the 225bhp 3.0 litre six-cylinder engine while the cabin is built for comfort with supportive leather seating and an advanced infotainment system that responds to voice commands. On a warm day, you can fold back the retractable roof in just 10 seconds – even when travelling at up to 30mph – and you’ll find the driving experience focused and uncompromising no matter the weather.

Mazda MX-5

One of hardest things to find in a used sports car is a good all-rounder. That’s where the Mazda MX-5 comes in. This popular car combines its suave looks with agile handling, enhanced by its lightweight chassis and sporty suspension. Its rear-wheel drive gives you the oomph you want to feel when behind the wheel while 16-inch alloy wheels and traction control as included as standard. Inside, the MX-5 offers a surprising amount of space as well as a 130-litre boot that can easily fit a couple of shopping bags or an overnight holdall. Buyers can decide between the hard or soft top model and trust that, whichever one they choose, the Mazda will be reliable with minimal mechanical issues.

Jaguar F-Type

With its striking looks and impressive performance, the Jaguar F-Type more than deserves its spot on our list of the best used sports cars. It offers two-seats, an elongated bonnet, and a chunky rear, which help it to have good grip around corners, staying stable even when picking up speed. The top range F-Type can hit 200mph and emits a satisfying growl as it does so, while its sharp handling makes it fun to drive at any speed. Boot space is generous too; drivers can make the most of 196 litres in the convertible and 315 litres in the coupe.

Mercedes SLC

If speed is your priority when buying a used sports car, consider the Mercedes SLC. It’s a quick, premium convertible that offers strong performance, a classic exterior design, and luxurious interior. Outside, you’ll find a simple silhouette and a folding metal roof while in the cabin there’s more than enough room for two people to get comfy on long drives. The ride is quiet, even at higher speeds, and its standard nine-speed automatic gearbox ensures smooth and effortless acceleration. The SLC is practical too; it includes fuel-saving technology and weighted steering that helps to improve drive quality on the motorway.

Nissan 370Z

The Nissan 370Z has a more heavyweight design than most other used sports cars but that doesn’t mean it can't move quickly. Its speed is propelled by some serious power, and it feels like an old school muscle car with deliberate handling. A chunky coupe, the 370Z has sporty styling inside and out and has been well-built with reassuring reliability. Simply put, it does the job and has a lot more character than many other models on the road today.
