Passing your driving test is one of life’s big moments. Being able to drive your own car gives you so much freedom. No more begging for lifts or waiting in the rain for the bus to finally turn up. But you won’t be going anywhere fast without a car. Buying your first car is another right of passage and there’s a lot to consider before taking the plunge.

When you have a budget to consider and potentially high insurance premiums, buying a used car could be a great option. And luckily, there are some fantastic affordable options available.

What are good first cars for 2021?

If you’re starting 2021 as a new driver, check out our pick of four of the best first cars in the UK:

The Ford Fiesta 1.1L Ti-VCT

Affordable and built-to-last, the Ford Fiesta is an enduring first car favourite. The 1.1L Ti-VCT is its entry-level model and is great for new drivers looking for a comfortable ride and easy steering on everyday journeys. It’s a good all-rounder to all ages but if you’re 17 and just starting out, the Fiesta is reliable, stylish, and safe.

The Kia Picanto

If you’re looking for something with a sporty edge, the Kia Picanto is an affordable option. It looks good and is practical too; think five doors, 16-inch alloy wheels, and optional automatic gearbox. A stylish supermini, you’ll feel just as confident navigating busy city roads and practicing your parallel park as you will taking it out for a spin on the motorway.

Citreon_c1.jpg

The Citroën C1

Quirky, stylish, and good value for money, the Citroen C1 is one of the best first cars for city dwellers who have recently passed their driving test. It boasts an impressive four out of five Euro NCAP star rating for safety and offers a smart connecting box for all your Bluetooth and USB needs. Maintenance is affordable too; a 12-month service (or one every 15,500 miles) should keep you on the road year-round.

The Renault Zoe

The Renault Zoe supermini is a relatively cheap first car, but it comes equipped with all the modern perks you’d expect including cruise control and Bluetooth. Inexperienced drivers will feel instantly at home behind the wheel while driver assist tool like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and parking sensors are a bonus (especially if you’re still getting to grips with tight spaces!)
