The Ford Focus ECOnetic has been named the Green Car of the Year by environmental motoring website Whatgreencar?

In news which will be of interest to environmentally-friendly car loans customers, the site said the 'green' car meets the average driver's needs.

The site's independent panel of judges assessed cars on their environmental impact, carbon dioxide emissions, price, running costs, design and reliability.

Ford's Focus ECOnetic scored 33 - better than the site's benchmark hybrid - and was named the overall winner from a shortlist of ten cars.

Whatgreencar.com editor Dr Ben Lane said: "With the fuel efficient Ford Focus ECOnetic all new car buyers have the opportunity to purchase a more environmentally-friendly car that meets the average motorist's needs."

According to the awards results, the vehicle will do 65.6 mpg, emitting 115g of CO2 per kilometre.

WhatGreencar? was founded in 2006, following publication of core site content as an ebook in 2004.

It rates vehicles on a scale from 0 for the greenest vehicles and 100 for the most polluting.
