New figures suggest that people taking out car finance deals are using them to purchase vehicles with diesel engines.
According to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there has been a 7.3 per cent increase in registrations of such cars for the year to date.
This comes despite the new car market showing a 13 per cent fall in July and a three per cent drop for 2008 as a whole.
Furthermore, the body added that demand for vehicles which are alternatively fuelled has gone up, with 1,479 units registered over the course of the month.
Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, remarked that the industry "needs the support of the government in order to encourage the uptake of lower-emitting vehicles".
He stated that it would "ultimately lower the cost of motoring for consumers".
This comes as Money News has reported on a blog from TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk, which stated that people who drive in an eco-friendly manner "will save money as well as the environment".
