The smart cdi arrives in showrooms across the UK in March and is capable of 83.1 mpg.
According to the manufacturer, it also offers the lowest carbon dioxide emissions of any car currently in production at 88 g/km.
This follows the launch of the smart micro hybrid drive - which the company pointed out allows for fuel savings of as much as 24 per cent when driving involves a lot of stopping and starting.
Commenting on the expanding line-up, Dermot Kelly, managing director at Mercedes-Benz UK, said the manufacturer's "reputation for affordability and economy is growing and the range is being considered by an increasing number of motorists who are seeking to reduce their motoring costs".
