Motorists who could see themselves taking out a car loan for an electric model in the coming years may welcome a recent announcement from Vauxhall.
The manufacturer has revealed it intends to release the Ampera in the UK in 2012.
It issued this statement at the 79th Geneva Motor Show, which got underway this week.
Carl-Peter Forster, European president of General Motors (GM), said: "The Ampera further demonstrates GM's leadership in the electrification of the automobile."
He added: "Its ground-breaking Voltec electric propulsion system is the kind of game-changing technology the automotive industry needs."
The wheels on the Ampera are powered electrically at all times and speeds.
During journeys of up to about 40 miles, the car can rely solely on its battery.
For longer trips, the vehicle turns to its on-board generator and this extends its range to over 300 miles.
Previously, Vauxhall claimed the Ampera offers plenty of passenger space and futuristic equipment.
