BMW in financial and PR disaster

Remember the Toyota recall a few months back? How about the Ferrari 458 recall? Both of these issues were varying in their impact. It was a complete disaster for Toyota. Ferrari, however, got away with it due to the small numbers of cars affected. And now it’s BMW’s turn.

Remember the Toyota recall a few months back? How about the Ferrari 458 recall? Both of these issues were varying in their impact. It was a complete disaster for Toyota. Ferrari, however, got away with it due to the small numbers of cars affected. And now it’s BMW’s turn.

The German manufacturer who claims to create the ‘ultimate driving machine’ has announced a recall of some 226,000 models. The recall affects 26,000 cars in the UK and the rest of the total is only applicable in the US. According to BMW, the recall is due to concerns regarding a potential leak in the power braking system – which is comforting to know.

The cars affected are V8 and V12-powered BMW 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, and rather worryingly, the Rolls-Royce line-up from model years 2002-2010.
BMW said: "In the affected vehicles, a leak may develop in the power braking system, potentially causing a vacuum loss and consequent reduction of power braking assistance. Mechanical braking is still available to slow and stop the vehicle,"
