Ford’s quest for low-eco figures without resorting to hybrid or electric tech has taken another step forward as the company has announced its first three cylinder engine. The new 1.0-litre turbocharged unit lowers fuel consumption of its smaller cars but without losing any performance.

According to the blue oval, the engine is the most economical it has ever made and it will feature in the up-and-coming B-Max. Car finance fans will be happy to know the new eco-engine will more than likely feature in the KA and potentially the Fiesta.

The engine is likely to be a rival to Fiat’s TwinAir engine that has seen worldwide praise thanks to its small size but eco-performance.
