The latest car finance report is in and it makes for unsettling reading. According to figures from the Driving Standards Agency, there has been a considerable fall in the numbers of young people learning to drive. The figures show that from the 17 to 25-year-olds sector, applicants have dropped 19 percent since 2005-06.

"The reasons for the drop in the number of tests taken by 17-25 year-olds are not clear cut," said the DSA.

"We know from the statistics available from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) that population projections for 17 year-olds have been in decline since 2008; it is expected that numbers will start to increase again from 2020.”

"Test pass rates and economic and social factors are also likely to play a part."
