Are Electric and Hybrid Cars About to Get Louder?

We all should know the green-cross-code, but with so many quiet and almost silent electric and hybrids cars roaming the roads, it does pose an issue with safety. After all, checking once, twice and even three times may not be enough if you can’t hear the things coming around a blind corner.

We all should know the green-cross-code, but with so many quiet and almost silent electric and hybrids cars roaming the roads, it does pose an issue with safety. After all, checking once, twice and even three times may not be enough if you can’t hear the things coming around a blind corner.

As a result, the UN is forcing car manufacturers to fit audible warning systems to its electric and hybrid cars.

Christian This from the UN team spoke to The Daily Telegraph: "The development of acoustic warning devices for electric and hybrid electric vehicles, which market share is rapidly growing in many countries, will be an important element to enhance the safety of these vehicles.

"A regulation will ensure a consistent approach across the industry, which is key for the effectiveness and acceptance of such devices."

Let’s hope they don’t make the things sound like V8s – or nobody will buy them!
