Ford focus is best for 25 years

We all have our favourite cars from the last 25 years. It might be our first ever car or one that featured on a poster on our bedroom wall as a kid but deciding on the best car from this period is sure to raise some interesting debates. And so it proved when Auto Express announced that a poll of its readers had placed the humble Ford Focus in top spot in its list of the greatest cars of the last quarter of a century.

The simple Ford family hatchback beat supercars from the likes of Aston Martin, Bugatti and Ferrari as it claimed the chequered flag.

The Ford Focus was first manufactured in 1998, when it rolled of the production line to replace the popular but ageing Ford Escort. Auto Express editor, Jack Rix, welcomed the result of the poll, saying: "The Ford Focus has beaten a hot hatch with world rally championship-winning pedigree and the world's greatest supercar to the top prize. That may shock some of you, but for us there is no more deserving winner. Why? Because when the Focus was introduced, it didn't just improve on the stodgy looks and driving dynamics of the Escort it replaced. It redefined what customers should expect from an affordable hatchback. Even today, it is a very comfortable car."

Institute of Advanced Motorists chief, Kevin Delaney, joined in the praise, saying the result was far from a shock: "It is nice to see some recognition for the simple family car. In many ways I am not surprised. There are these sports cars out there and we can all look at them, but just as I am never likely to own a Rembrandt and I am never going to own a Bugatti Veyron. You can aspire to owning a Ford Focus and like all Fords they just go on and on. It is a simple, reliable form of mass transportation. If you were to ask what the greatest ever car was most people would probably say the Model T Ford and this is just following in that tradition."

The Focus beat the rally specialist Lancia Delta Integrale into second place in a top ten list that included such exotica as the McLaren F1 and Bugatti Veyron, alongside more affordable classics like the Volkswagen Golf. The poll also featured a list of the worst cars of the last 25 years, which included the CityRover, Daihatsu Move and unfortunately named Mitsubishi Carisma.
