New Jaguar and Ford models released

Two brand new models have been revealed this week that, for very different reasons, will be vital to the UK car industry. In Brazil, the Ford Ka Concept was unveiled. This is a global city car that will go on sale in markets across the world in 2014. This could be a vital car both for Ford and the UK motorist. Recent sales figures show that UK drivers continue to buy smaller cars.

This trend towards downsizing has seen the Ka's stable mate, the Fiesta, reach the top of the sales charts as the best-selling car in the UK so far in 2013. These sales figures show that superminis continue to be the largest car sector by volume sales in the UK. The new Ford Ka will be hoping to take advantage of this trend and join its big brother at the top of the sales charts.

Welcoming the launch, president of Ford in the Americas, Joe Hinrichs, said: "The Ford Ka Concept is aimed at customers in growth markets who want and expect more. The Ka Concept shows the continued importance of our South American design and engineering capabilities to serve markets around the world. It's truly another global design and engineering milestone for Ford."

This is a second car to the developer by Ford in Brazil. The first was the ECOsport compact SUV, which is scheduled to go on sale early next year in the UK. Although it shares the same name, the new Ka is very different from its predecessor, which was based on the Fiat 500. The new Ka has a new platform and a five door body style.

At the other end of the motoring spectrum, Jaguar is about to release the new F-type coupe. Although the official launch is not until later in November, a heavily disguised model has been spotted in a supermarket car park in Leamington Spa, close to the car maker's headquarters in Gaydon. A young car enthusiast and student spotted the camouflaged vehicle and took some photographs. From these pictures, the F-type looks pretty identical to the concept car that was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor show in 2011. Indeed, the only noticeable difference seems to be a change to the rather unusual side opening tailgate on the concept car, which has been replaced by a normal hatch. The car's official launch is scheduled for November 19, the day before it appears at the Los Angeles Auto show.
