Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has become the latest UK carmaker to announce excellent full year results for 2013. The company sold a total of 425,000 vehicles across the globe. The results represented a rise in sales of almost 20% for JLR, outperforming the UK market as a whole, which saw a rise of around 10%. The company manufactures cars in factories in Merseyside and the West Midlands. JLR has been steadily building its export territories and China now represents its biggest single market. Last year, however, the company's fastest growing markets were Germany, India and the US. In fact, JLR was the fastest growing of any brand in Germany.

The company is benefiting from a bounce back in world economies, including the UK. It is also heavily focused on emerging economies like China and India, where demand in the luxury car sector is growing rapidly. Exports now make up around 80% of all JLR sales, with around 340,000 cars being shipped abroad last year. Land Rover makes up the bulk of JLR sales, with 350,000 cars sold last year. The Jaguar brand, meanwhile, saw sales increase by an astonishing 42% on 2012 figures. The company is expanding to meet demand and will now hire an additional 2,000 staff to cope with the increase, bringing the total number of employees to around 26,000.

Much improved industrial relations have been key to JLR's performance and the revival of the marque was heralded by assistant general secretary of the Unite union, Tony Burke, who commented: "Jaguar Land Rover is a remarkable manufacturing success story. The company faced serious problems prior to 2008 but our members in Unite and the company worked together to turn JLR's fortunes around. The manufacturer's fantastic performance is testament to the workforce."

JLR's success is mirrored in the overall performance of the UK car industry, which has now seen production and sales rise for six years running. Domestic car sales in the UK are also on the up, in a welcome sign that the British economy is finally recovering. The latest boom is thought to be the result of widely available cheap finance products and the bonus provided by the repayments of mis-sold loan insurance. The immediate future looks bright for JLR. Jaguar will shortly be launching a compact luxury performance saloon to compete with BMW's 3-Series and the Mercedes C-Class. There are also plans for a 4x4 SUV and the F-Type Coupe will shortly take to the roads.
