Picking a used car in the right colour and with the most attractive accessories can substantially increase its resale value, reports Motor Trader.
Research from the Manheim Group found this applied at all different price ranges, but was particularly noticeable the more expensive the vehicle was.
For instance, choosing colours that drivers do not typically like – such as white – can cut £425 off the price of an executive used car and £150 off the value of a family used car.
Satellite navigation is also an important feature to have when trying to sell on a car, as it can add as much as £500 to the car's value.
"The message is simple – motorists should ignore options at their peril when buying their next new car," Rob Barr from the Manheim Group told Motor Trader.
"They may be lucky and get it right but if they get it wrong, they'll suffer the financial consequences," he added.
Buying a used car is one of the best ways to cut your car finance costs, which can be brought even lower by taking out a car loan or car credit deal.
