The survey, put together by environmental motoring website Clean Green Cars, has identified the vehicles currently on the market that perform best in terms of improvements in emissions levels.
According to the figures, it was BMW's Mini which outperformed its rivals recording an average cut in CO2 emissions of around 17.1 per cent on 2006.
Commenting on the report Jay Nagley, publisher of the survey, said that it was becoming increasingly important for the industry to track its progress in providing low emission vehicles to car finance customers.
"As CO2 performance is such and important topic it is vital to have accurate and timely information for the UK market," he said.
"Clean Green Cars is the only independent body to publish this information, which is produced by correlating sales of every single model in the UK with its official CO2 output to give a sales-weighted average."
In related news, Reuters reports this week that Nissan is expecting to launch its own electric-powered car in 2010.
