The supermini has been named the most popular type of car on the market, according to a new study.
The survey, conducted by credit and data specialists Experian, revealed that within the first six months of this year 1.1 million of the cars had been sold in the UK.
Motortrader.com reports today that this figure brings sales of superminis 0.2 per cent higher than family models which are traditionally the most popular type of vehicle for motorists - including those with car finance.
Commenting on the results, Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian's automotive division, said that the growth in sales of the supermini was indicative of changing attitudes to affordability.
"With growing levels of personal debt, higher running costs, increasing tax and pressures to reduce our impact on the environment, the benefits of a smaller car are becoming more apparent to car buyers," he said.
This year the UK's top selling supermini, Ford's Fiesta, reached a sales total of 176,351, beating its closest rivals the Vauxhall Corsa and Renault's Clio.
