Following the successful rebirth of the Mini, BMW has announced that it is to relaunch another iconic car of a bygone decade.

According to Auto Express, the German manufacturer is set to breathe a new lease of life into the Isetta microcar, which could be great news for new car finance customers seeking a cheap and economic vehicle.

The magazine reports that although the new model will retain the spirit of its predecessor it will be very much a 21st century vehicle with a modern engine, low emissions and a sleek new design.

"While the classic delivered only 12bhp, the newcomer will easily keep pace with urban traffic, thanks to the efforts of BMW's powertrain development team," the site claims - adding that the rear-mounted engine layout will also remain.

The Isetta was originally produced in Italy in the early 1950's however BMW gave the car a radical overhaul in 1955 making it hugely popular for many years.

The car has been built in many countries and been known under many different names, including Germany where it was nicknamed das rollende Ei - or the rolling egg.
