A new study looking at the reliability of used cars has highlighted a number of models as a great best option.

The study, put together by Consumer Reports, looked at the efficiency, reliability, value and safety of around 1.3 million used cars and revealed that there are "hundreds" of models that would be a solid purchase.

It was revealed that among the best vehicles on the used car market produced between 1998 and 2007 were BMW's M3 as well as Honda's Accord, CR-V, Civic and Civic Hybrid models.

Lexus made a number of appearances in the "Best of the Best" list as did Mazda, Nissan and Subaru. However, it was perhaps Toyota that had the strongest presence with 15 entries making the grade.

The manufacturer's 4Runner, Celica, Corolla, Prius and Land Cruiser were among the used cars selected for their value as a second-hand purchase.
