More eco-friendly options could soon be available to those with car finance, as a new partnership is announced that focuses on the development of electric-powered engines.

The agreement, between German car manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) and Japanese electronics firm Sanyo, aims to have lithium-ion battery technology incorporated into new VW cars by 2010.

Commenting on the news, Reuters reports that VW chief executive Professor Martin Winterkorn said that the development of greener vehicles was central to the company's future plans.

"Our focus in future will be directed more strongly at making electrically-powered automobiles alongside ones driven by more efficient combustion engines."

Earlier this year, VW unveiled their latest Golf TDI Hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show which carpages.co.uk stated offered CO2 emissions levels of under 90 g/km while still achieving 83 mpg.

The site added that although the vehicle was still in its concept stages, car loans customers may see a version of the car in the future.
